January is generally a mild month in San Antonio, with temperatures hovering around 50 to 60 degrees. 2024 has been different. Winter storms have swept through all 50 states. San Antonio and other areas of Texas have seen heavy rain and even ice, which has led to dangerous conditions on the roadways.
Many roadways in San Antonio have seen icy conditions, leading to numerous car crashes. Elevated roads such as bridges and overpasses have been especially icy, causing multi-vehicle crashes. In mid-January, accidents were reported on local highways and streets, especially in northern San Antonio and northern Bexar County.

When temperatures dip below freezing, it is best to avoid travel. If you do have to be on the roads, avoid bridges and overpasses. There have been reports of ice accumulating in Bulverde and Spring Branch on US 281, between FM 1864 and FM 46. Many vehicles have had difficulty climbing hills and negotiating ramps.
The Texas Department of Transportation is treating the roads to prevent ice accumulation. Drivers should watch out for crews.
Driving on Ice
If you encounter ice while driving, do the following:
- Drive slow. Reduce your speed when driving on icy roads. This helps to maintain control of your vehicle.
- Increase following distance. Leave plenty of space between your car and the vehicle in front of you so that you can safely stop or maneuver if necessary.
- Avoid sudden movements. Abrupt movements such as quick acceleration, braking, or sharp turns can cause your vehicle to slide on ice.
- Use winter tires. Winter tires are designed to provide better traction in cold weather conditions, including ice and snow.
- Know how to brake. If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, apply steady pressure to the brake pedal. If your vehicle does not have ABS, gently pump the brakes to prevent skidding.
- Stay calm. If you start to skid, remain calm. Steer in the direction you want the front of your vehicle to go. Avoid slamming on the brakes.
