A traumatic brain injury is one of the worst type you could suffer. Below, our Texas personal injury lawyer explains the most common types.

A car crash, slip and fall, and other types of accidents can all result in a traumatic brain injury. There is no such thing as a minor brain injury. They can all result in autonomic nervous system dysfunction, hormonal changes, vision problems, and vestibular dysfunction. These can all impact accident victims for the rest of their lives. There are also different types of traumatic brain injuries, which are explained further below.

Concussions

Concussions are by far the most common type of traumatic brain injury. The most common causes of concussions are closed head injuries and blunt force trauma. An object can hit an accident victim’s head or their head may strike an object during a crash. Closed-head injuries are most often caused by rear-end accidents, falls, and other incidents that result in the brain shaking against the skull. This damages the blood vessels and brain tissues.

Penetrating Brain Injuries

As the name suggests, penetrating brain injuries are a result of an object penetrating the skull and entering the brain. This type of injury can result in the death of brain cells, and will always cause excessive bleeding. Other complications can include blood clots, brain swelling, stroke, and a lack of oxygen due to the lack of blood circulation to the brain.

Contusions and Anoxic Brain Injuries

Contusions occur when the brain is struck against the skull, which can cause bruising on the brain. If the site of the bruise bleeds, it can also result in the brain swelling. If the swelling is not relieved soon after the injury, the brain can suffer from a lack of oxygen.

Anoxic brain injuries occur when the brain does not receive the oxygen it needs. After just four minutes without oxygen, the cells in the brain will start to die. Anoxic brain injuries are most commonly caused by drowning, but damaged blood vessels can also result in this type of injury.

Diffuse Axonal Injuries

Diffuse axonal injuries are extremely serious. These are similar to other brain injuries in the way that they start with the brain moving within the skull. The long connecting fibers are then torn away from the brain. This can cause serious brain damage in many different locations on the brain. It is estimated that approximately 25 percent of diffuse axonal injuries will result in death.
