Contusions occur when the brain is struck against the skull, which can cause bruising on the brain. If the site of the bruise bleeds, it can also result in the brain swelling. If the swelling is not relieved soon after the injury, the brain can suffer from a lack of oxygen.
Anoxic brain injuries occur when the brain does not receive the oxygen it needs. After just four minutes without oxygen, the cells in the brain will start to die. Anoxic brain injuries are most commonly caused by drowning, but damaged blood vessels can also result in this type of injury.
Diffuse Axonal Injuries
Diffuse axonal injuries are extremely serious. These are similar to other brain injuries in the way that they start with the brain moving within the skull. The long connecting fibers are then torn away from the brain. This can cause serious brain damage in many different locations on the brain. It is estimated that approximately 25 percent of diffuse axonal injuries will result in death.
