Make plans to celebrate the holiday responsibly. If you are traveling this Thanksgiving, be sure to make safety a priority.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding drivers to take this responsibility seriously
"...DPS is reminding drivers of their duty to help keep our roadways safe” said DPS Director Steven McCraw.
Over 73,000 traffic citations and warnings were issued by DPS troopers during the 2017 Thanksgiving holiday, including 8,449 for speeding. DPS also made 324 arrests who were driving while intoxicated.
DPS offers the following tips for safe travel during the extended holiday weekend:

  • Don't drink and drive. Make alternate travel plans if you are consuming alcohol.
  • Slow down - especially in bad weather, construction areas, heavy traffic and unfamiliar areas.
  • Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices - it's the law.
  • Buckle up everyone in the vehicle – it’s the law.
  • Drive defensively
  • Don’t drive fatigued
  • Report any road hazards or anything suspicious to law enforcement immediately
  • On multi-lane roadways, use the left lane for passing ONLY - it's the law.
  • Before your trip begins, make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and always double check to make sure all luggage is secure.
  • Stay up to date with weather and road conditions wherever you are traveling. For road conditions/closings in Texas, visit Drive Texas.
